A new book from Wiley examines what happens when that technology fails, is disrupted, or is targeted by a cyberattack.
Securing What Feeds Us: Cybersecurity in Food and Agriculture, by cybersecurity and operational technology risk expert Kristin King, is the first book dedicated to cybersecurity in the food and agriculture sector. It pulls back the curtain on the technology quietly running modern food and agriculture and challenges the idea that cybersecurity is only an IT problem.
Written for readers with or without a technical background, the book combines real-world incidents with practical guidance for understanding cyber-physical risk, preparing for disruption and building resilience.
“Food and agriculture have become incredibly technology-dependent, but we still tend to talk about cybersecurity as though it is separate from the physical world,” King said. “When technology controls refrigeration, feeding systems, processing lines, environmental controls, or logistics, a cyber incident can quickly become an operational problem. The point of this book isn’t to scare people with what can go wrong. It’s to help them understand what matters, prepare for disruption, and build the resilience to keep operating when technology doesn’t.”
In June 2025, a cyberattack on United Natural Foods (UNFI) disrupted distribution and left some grocery shelves empty. King uses publicly disclosed cases, including UNFI and incidents affecting farms, processors, warehouses and fisheries, to show how cyber risk can reach production, safety, animal welfare and the movement of food.
The book also grew out of conversations King has had through her award-winning Bites and Bytes Podcast with farmers, ranchers, food safety and food defense professionals, researchers, aquaculture specialists and fisheries experts. In one conversation, a Canadian wheat farmer told her that farmers know they are at risk but often do not know where to start. King opens the book by addressing that frustration directly, apologizing to the agricultural community on behalf of the cybersecurity community for too often identifying the problem without providing practical, accessible help.
King’s point is not that farmers, food producers, or operations teams need to become cybersecurity experts. Cybersecurity needs to become part of the work already being done to protect food, animals, people and operations. The book addresses operational technology, third-party risk, incident response, food safety culture, business continuity, and cyber-aware teams, with practical steps organizations can take to prepare, respond, and keep critical operations running.
